The Lake Biograd, one of the natural attractions of Montenegro, can disappear in the 22nd century. In 130 years, the lake can be filled with sediments carried by the River Biograd, which flows into the lake. Dr. Velibor Spalevic the Professor of the University of Montenegro reported disappointing forecasts. According to his reports, 282 cubic meters of land per square kilometer of territory along the river is washed out annually.
It is important to install gabions along the banks (fortifications made of stones covered with mesh) and take other steps to protect against the soil erosion to preserve the protected areas.
The Lake Plav in the eastern part of Montenegro is also in the danger of disappearing. Its area has decreased by 15% over 50 years.
